Why desert pools burn through chlorine faster

If you top up chlorine and it seems gone by the weekend, the desert is not being unfair to you. There are a couple of specific reasons, and one of them is fixable.

Chlorine has two enemies in the Coachella Valley, and they both show up in force from roughly May through September: ultraviolet light and heat.

UV light breaks chlorine apart

Sunlight does not simply warm your pool. The ultraviolet portion of it splits free chlorine molecules apart in a process called photolysis. On a long, bright summer day, an unstabilized pool can lose a large share of its free chlorine before dinner.

This is why a pool can test fine in the morning and read near zero by evening, without anyone having swum in it.

Heat speeds up everything else

Warmer water accelerates the chemical reactions that consume chlorine, and it is also far friendlier to algae and bacteria. A pool sitting in the mid-eighties is asking more of its sanitizer than the same pool at seventy.

Add the organic load that arrives on the wind here, and demand climbs further.

What stabilizer actually does

Cyanuric acid, usually sold as stabilizer or conditioner, bonds loosely with free chlorine and shields it from UV. It is genuinely effective, and in a desert pool it is not optional.

The catch is that more is not better. As cyanuric acid climbs, it also slows chlorine down, so you need a higher chlorine reading to get the same sanitizing power. Push it high enough and you end up with water that tests as though it has chlorine while behaving as though it does not.

Commonly published guidance puts stabilizer somewhere in the range of 30 to 50 ppm for an outdoor residential pool. Your ideal number depends on how your pool is sanitized, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Stabilizer does not evaporate and it does not burn off. It only leaves when water leaves, through splash-out, backwashing, or partial draining. It is easy to add and slow to remove, so add it deliberately.

Things that help, in rough order of impact

  • Get stabilizer into range and leave it there. This is the single biggest lever in a desert pool.
  • Run the pump during the hottest part of the day. Circulating water distributes sanitizer instead of letting it sit in pockets.
  • Keep the pH in range. Around 7.2 to 7.8 is the usual target. Chlorine gets noticeably less effective as pH drifts high.
  • Brush regularly. Algae starts as a film that chlorine struggles to reach. Breaking it up mechanically does work your sanitizer cannot.
  • Test more often in summer than in winter. Demand is not constant across the year, so a fixed routine will be wrong half the time.

When it is not the chlorine

If sanitizer disappears no matter what you do, the cause is often something else feeding on it: an algae bloom that has not gone visible yet, a filter that is no longer really filtering, or circulation that leaves part of the pool effectively stagnant.

Chasing that with more chlorine gets expensive quickly. It is usually cheaper to find out why the demand is there.

The short version

Desert pools are not harder to keep clean, but they are less forgiving of guessing. Stabilizer in range, pH in range, water moving, and a brush on the walls will do most of the work.
